GOVERNMENTS OF CANADA AND NEW BRUNSWICK CREATE JOBS, BUILD COMMUNITIES
August 19, 2009

Residents of Nackawic will benefit from joint federal and provincial investments. Tobique Mactaquac MP Mike Allen, together with the Honourable Greg Byrne, New Brunswick Minister of Finance, announced today a combined investment of more than $135,000 for upgrades to the Nackawic arena through the RInC program.  The federal and provincial governments also announced they will each invest nearly $14,000 for computer software that will assist Nackawic in planning for future water infrastructure improvements through the Building Canada Fund program.  This funding will help stimulate the economy, enhance local services, and contribute to the health and quality of life of the families in this region. NACKAWIC (NB) – August 19, 2009 – Residents of Nackawic will benefit from joint federal and provincial funding to collect important data on which to build more efficient and effective water and wastewater systems. The announcement was made today by Mike Allen, Member of Parliament for Tobique-Mactaquac, and Greg Byrne, provincial Minister of Finance. This project is just one example of the commitment of both governments to strengthening the New Brunswick economy and improving the quality of life for residents.

This project will enhance local facilities and services and create local jobs, at a time when the need for economic stimulus is greatest.

The governments of Canada and New Brunswick are each investing $13,845 towards the total eligible costs of the project. The Town of Nackawic is contributing the balance.

“Our federal investment of nearly $14,000 will assist Nackawic in collecting important data on which to build a more efficient water and wastewater system. The Government of Canada recognizes that modern, reliable infrastructure can improve quality of life, attract business and create jobs for today and for years to come,” said MP Allen.

“This project will help Nackawic determine exactly what its needs are in building the infrastructure they need to sustain their community,” said Byrne.  “Our government is committed to support projects like these that will benefit the health and safety of our residents, and put us all closer to achieving self-sufficiency.”

This project will support the costs associated with creating computer software that will be used to accurately model the Town of Nackawic's water distribution system. Valves, hydrants, main sizes, elevations, and pump characteristics will be confirmed and input into the model.

The model will allow for an accurate representation of the Town's water distribution system to develop the necessary flushing program as well as to evaluate existing and potential options for the future chlorination of the Town's water supply.

This software will ultimately allow the municipality to examine various options to determine the most effective and cost efficient alternatives in maintaining water quality guidelines. In addition, the Town will be able to use the model in the future to evaluate other improvement options as needed, and integrate it as an infrastructure management tool.

This project is one of 32 across the province that will get underway quickly, thanks to a joint federal-provincial investment of more than $48 million announced on July 24. The governments of Canada and New Brunswick have taken steps to advance projects and flow money faster for targeted infrastructure projects in New Brunswick communities in the 2009 and 2010 construction seasons.

The Government of Canada’s Economic Action Plan is accelerating and expanding the existing federal investment of $33 billion in infrastructure with almost $12 billion in new infrastructure stimulus funding over two years. The Government of Canada and the Province of New Brunswick are working closely together to ensure that these infrastructure funds are being spent on priority projects across the province.
